‘Candide’ (temporary title)
During 2007 we will develop a wide-spread plan that envisages the co-production of a performance with various Italian and foreign partners. From a production point of view, the plan is in the development phase and definition of co-production partners.
The following is the general format that we will follow for the artistic project.
First of all, we will begin with a formal idea of theatrical and dramaturgical research that will take us, as in our previous productions, to develop a complete project through a series of successive steps of approach and depth in order to reach the final performance that is the result of the reflections generated during the previous stages. Each step will constitute a moment in time to meet the audience and receive feedback on the relevance of each dramaturgical and formal survey regarding the theatrical form.
In this context, the company plans to conduct several workshops that will constitute the most important theme of each stage. On this occasion, the ‘Teatrino Clandestino’ will turn its attention to subjects who are unusual actors, but who are in the experience of the company. They are children ranging from six to eight years (the company has already directed children of similar ages through workshops and also on the stage in ‘Sinfonia Majakovkjiana’ and in ‘Il Ginepro’ ‘Favola cimiteriale’
By guiding and stimulating the children through thematic improvisations, this time the idea is to grasp linguistic forms, thought processes, physical and extensive relationships, and to catch, through careful observation and recording, speech and behaviour, in order to use these materials to create a drama that will be perfectly stamped with the logic of childish imagery. This drama will be delivered to a group of adult actors who will have to emulate the behaviour and language inferred by the children’s improvisations. We think that this will produce an extremely ironical effect. If childish expressions ironically emphasize their immaturity, the moral purity of their form of thought ironically redeems them. Therefore, the characters will speak and act on war, love, exploitation, politics, life and death with the purity of childhood, but with the appearance of the corruption of a grown-up.
For such purposes, we think that workshops with children have enormous potential for improvisation as they reflect every level of an actor’s scenical presence and not only the linguistic aspect.
Working with children of different nationalities that embodies the stereotypes of respective cultures without filters, will enrich the potential for this kind of research.
Considering the above, Pietro Babina and Fiorenza Menni could be assisted in leading the workshops by interpreters, not only in the spoken language, but also in the wider linguistic concepts that involve all the behavioural and expressive spheres.
It would also be interesting to put children of different cultures in improvisional contexts and observe how they try to avoid the problem of communication and interaction (what solutions to they offer?).
A thematic idea is linked to this formal idea; as a cadre-plot for the improvisations, we are going to use a fundamental text from Western culture since its content will allow us to maintain a thematic continuity with our 4 previous works.
This is Voltaire’s ‘Candide’ which, through its protagonist, undertakes a moral and political journey that seems topical even today, and it is interesting to rediscover together the satirical facet of this great short novel.
Today we can preview three preparatory steps in order to conclude with a fourth and final work that will be the last formal part of this project.
